These Christmas lights for Passeig de Gràcia eschewed the traditional seasonal iconography, taking instead as their formal reference the sinuous lines of the Modernista (art noveau) architecture that is so characteristic of this avenue in Barcelona. Specifically, the lighting was inspired by the catenary arches that are a feature of some of Gaudí’s buildings. The large lights were arranged in a seemingly random manner and were pointed in different directions, achieving a dynamic and changing visual effect as people passed by on foot or in vehicles.
