FRANCESC TOSQUELLES. LIKE A SEWING MACHINE IN A WHEAT FIELD

The exhibition emphasised the figure, the work and the political and artistic environment of a psychiatrist who revolutionised the medical practices of his time and transmitted an innovative and remarkable cultural legacy, which is unknown to most people. Francesc Tosquelles dealt with the social roots of mental illness in order to transform psychiatric institutions.

The exhibition presented an ample selection of films, historical materials, surrealist avant-garde pieces and objects produced by the patients of the Saint-Alban hospital from the Art Brut Collection in Lausanne.

The design of the exhibition was an exercise of austerity to ensure the neutrality of the space and to avoid standing out over the work. A sober and honest language was chosen, using raw, untreated materials and an abbreviated colour range.

At the same time, in order to be sustainable, we were faced with the challenge of using many of the existing display cases in the CCCB’s warehouses.
